The height of Doom’s popularity was…maybe 1994-95? At the time, I mostly just watched other playing, as I get scared easily. Plus I only had a 386-40 with no cache and a lousy video card, so playing would have been like swimming in jello anyway.
Fast forward about 12 years and I finally got curious enough to check it out on Dosbox. While everyone else was busy spending $3000+ to get Crysis to run, I enjoyed an old classic for the first time. I didn’t mind the outdated/pixellated graphics at all – I found them quite charming. Also, I had great fun going right up to the radioactive slime bins and blowing myself up, haha.
Nowadays I tend to play the more peaceful Chex Quest instead, but I can totally see why Doom is considered one of the greatest games of all time. I look forward to exploring it more, probably with liberal use of the various cheat and warp codes!
