Despite playing Jazz Jackrabbit, DN1+2, Keen, Jill of the Jungle etc extensively as a kid, this particular game somehow never made it onto my trusty 486. And indeed, I had never heard of it until it was selected for DGC!
But I am glad it was picked. I just love these DOS platforms. I of course echo what everyone is saying about the “quirks”, but hey, it’s the quirks that make it stand out from the other ones mentioned.
I personally have got used to the controls fairly quickly, but there is a lot to learn. Like remembering to turn the radar on! And the endless search for that one hidden passage. And managing the miserly health pickups by being strategic with your hostage rescues. But once you get the knack, as noted above, it is particularly satisfying to crack a particularly gnarly level.
Now I’m going to go and check if DN1+2 have been suggested 🙂
