Last played over 30yo with a cheap two button joystick from Electronics Boutique. I recall having to use the keyboard often.
Once I’d moved on to WC3 I got newer sticks with way more buttons, and eventually a hat. My only beef with newer sticks is the narrower range of motion and muscle memory preventing one from hopping among other games. My OG stick moved so far, like ~120 degrees whilst newer ones felt like 90d or less.
