This is a Wing Commander 2 tip, but if you need to use torpedoes against capital ships, not only do you need to make sure they’re targeted (press T if you don’t see a red outline around it), but you also need to press ‘L’ before the torpedo will begin locking on. I could not figure that part out for an embarrassingly long time.
Another WC2 tip… if you need to rescue a pilot or pick up something to bring back to base, that’s confusing too. Pass the object and stop so it’s immediately behind you. Then you need to press ‘F4’ to change cockpits, then ‘G’ to change weapons to the tractor beam (or maybe ‘W’, don’t remember which).
