I actually didn’t think of recommending AW until now because I had assumed it had already been done in a previous year!

Aside from Prince of Persia, this is the grand-daddy of the cinematic platformer that, in my opinion, never had anything comparable before or after. Éric Chahi developed the entire game solo (aside from the music by Jean-François Freitas), including a scripting engine and beautiful animation editor. It’s hard to believe the entire game is painted in 16 colours.

The technical background on the engine has some fascinating background explored by Fabien Sanglard in several posts.

This game was a defining part of my childhood, even though the gameplay is unforgiving and outright mean at times. 🙂 I come back to it every year or two, and endure some punishment just for the joy of exploring each scene and watching the animation.

The DOS version received the best port – including additional scenes/levels that didn’t exist in the original Amiga release.

Such an amazingly beautiful game. It looks like an artistic Indie game that could be released today.
You might have to tweak the gameplay to appeal to modern audiences, but I think if it had only just come out it would still get great reviews.
I can’t believe I’ve only every played it once!

Another game on my long TODO list, would be happy to take the opportunity, finally, if it gets picked!
