Duke Nukem 1+2
-
Wow, can’t believe this hasn’t been suggested before!
Playing Halloween Harry this month has reminded me of these “gems”/”acquired tastes”. DN1 in particular I have a fondness for, as it was one of the very first PC games I ever played (with those joyous PC-speaker sounds blaring out). The second one is quite a step up in the visual/audio department and would be worth playing alongside the first, I reckon.
Would be good for the club to play the games that birthed the “legend” that is Duke Nukem.
Good point, I feel like these got semi-forgotten after 3D took over. Also, there was one version of DN1 spelled “Duke NukUm,” due to suspected (but unfounded) copyright issues. I wonder if the game itself is any different…there’s a similar discussion on the Halloween Harry thread.
p.s. nice Dark Forces icon!
For DN1, I am not aware of any gameplay differences between “Duke Nukum” and “Duke Nukem”, but I haven’t played these games through.
Between 3 episodes of DN1 and 4 episodes of DN2 (each episode of DN2 is twice the length of Halloween Harry), playing both in one month may be too much.
I had made the mistake(?) of playing DN2 first so I could never force myself to go back and play DN1. The primitive PC speaker noises and lack of music spoil it for me, despite some folks saying the game actually plays better…
I have very warm, fuzzy, memories of DN1. Somehow it just feels super tight and well put together to me, but I’m sure others will disagree. I for one like PC bleeper sounds if done well.
DN2 however, despite being on paper the perfect sequel, just leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied and frustrated for some reason.
But yes – I would love to do these games with the club!
+1 for DN1 being the better game, though I haven’t finished DN2, yet. If you want to play these games now, check out the Rigel engine or grab them for the Evercade.
I’m really curious about the Evercade versions, I bought a Super Pocket this summer and I think doing a spiced-up versions of old games like this is great. (Evercade hired the Rigel engine author to do a commercial project, so the first game also got the touch-up treatment, which is just really really cool in all.)
