I don’t recall ever playing ZZT before – I’d have thought I must have run into the shareware version at some point but I’m not so sure now. I definitely played Kroz which looks initially similar.

I played through the original 4 worlds over the weekend at any rate. I’m highly surprised how much fun this has been. I expected to bounce off this but I’m raring to try more worlds instead. It certainly shows you don’t need fancy graphics. It’s a nice mix of action and puzzle, maybe even some adventure gaming mechanics thrown in there. Figuring out some of these levels was trickier than I was expected. These “professional” levels still feel quite quirky and fan made which in this case is actually a good thing.

The only thing that bugs me about it so far is I appear to have to quit to restore a game. When you have so many unwinnable states, it would be nice if I could restore with one keypress. Maybe you can and I’ve just not found it.

It seems like there would be a lot of possibilities about what you could create (but I’ve not tried myself yet). I’m curious to see just what the engine will do if pushed now. Does anyone have recommendations for any worlds I should try for this?

I’ve yet to dive in myself, but from the short chat I’ve had with the ZZT Discord people, here are some links to possible good starting points for exploring custom content:

Also I’ve heard several people recommend “Burger Joint” as being apparently one of the more iconic ZZT games, so I’ll definitely be playing that one myself: https://museumofzzt.com/file/view/burgerj/

Oh, also! Apparently our very own David Newton (who has been on many an episode, including the one in which we revisit Doom and the one on Transport Tycoon, among others) was a ZZT creator in the early 2000s under the name “Wong Chung Bang”. His work can be found here: https://museumofzzt.com/file/browse/author/wong-chung-bang/

His game “The Mercenary” is apparently especially well received: https://museumofzzt.com/file/view/merc/

So that’s going on my list of games to check out for sure!
