It’s funny, I bought at least 3 of the collections over the years. But in reality I’ve only played a few titles: Planetfall, Zork, Infidel, Ballyhoo, Hitchiker’s guide, and Witness. A few notes:
– Planetfall needs no introduction, obviously!
– Zork (also on the GOG anthology) started it all for Infocom. I played it a few times as a kid, was too young to figure out most of the puzzles.
– Infidel was the only one I solved, and only after getting some hints. Egyptian desert-themed game, which I thought was pretty neat.
– Ballyhoo drove me nuts. The circus theme sounded like a winner, but I got myself into an unwinnable situation more than once, and just gave up.
– Hitchiker – I think I died on the first scene, lol. Probably easier for those who have read the books by Douglas Adams.
– Witness – some kind of murder mystery, where you play detective. This one too, was a little too tough for me.
I think I like the idea of IF and adventure games in general, more than actually playing them. I always seem to get stuck in a loop, either due to missing a crucial clue or getting hard-locked. In fact, I’d rather follow along with the clue books and ruin the surprises, than just stay stuck.
I do remember that one of the collections had some fan-made games, including Toonesia, a parody of the old Loony Toons cartoons. It’s short and easy – a rare game I was able to beat without hints. [EDIT: Oh no I didn’t. The game has an inline hint system, and I am 100% sure I used it at times.]
