I’ve started playing Links 386 Pro since it has been sitting in my GOG wishlist for a long time and I’m an Access fan most of the time and I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with it! It took a little while to get used to the controls since I’ve mostly played Golf games on consoles (mostly just Mario Golf), but I can see why people would be really into this.

It’s technically impressive for the time, as most Access games are. Since I come from a console games background for golf games, I didn’t realize how much of a simulation it would be but I think it’s really neat. You’ve got options for just about everything, including a few to make it easier for less experience players like me.

The wildest thing about the experience for me has been that it turns out I actually played this when it came out at my Uncle’s house and didn’t realize it until now. But when I heard those sound effects I knew that I had played this game back at the time because I was so impressed with them then too as a very young child.

Even though I kinda really dislike Golf as a sport in the real world, it’s fun seeing that the Access folks are still doing golf simulation software today. I would maybe prefer another Tex Murphy game or two but I understand how doing this would be better for paying the bills.

I have to agree @Mike, I’m not a golf person in real life, but for some reason Links 386 really grabs my attention. I’ve been having a great time playing it.

Funny thing is I too remember the sounds from playing this as a kid (although it escapes me where I played it, as we did not own the game).

I particularly enjoy that Links 386 comes with a bunch of pre-recorded players (the Access dev team) to play against, a really nice touch I must say.

I went looking for more recordings online and found this archive that includes some text files with playing tips.

I feel like somebody needs to mention the commentary on the special edition by Bobcat Goldthwaite.
I have to admit, I had totally forgotten this guy existed. Even more surprised to learn he’s still alive!

Anyway, some of his comments are funny. But I get the feeling he wasn’t using his A material…
