Released in 1993 by Apogee Entertainment

Johnny’s dog Tex is kidnapped by the Count, along with hundreds of other pet dogs and cats. The friendly bed monster under Johnny’s bed tells Johnny where Tex was taken, and how Johnny can use his secret closet passageway to get to the Under World himself. Count Chuck plans to turn all the pets into an army of undead monsters.

Johnny grabs his slingshot and leaps into his closet. The Count will not turn his dog Tex into a mon- ster, not if he can stop him…!

Monster Bash is full of scary action and haunting puzzles. Johnny can climb, crawl, shoot his sling-shot in several directions, fly a broom, and a lot more. And Johnny’s super charged slingshot can shoot rocks, rockets, fireballs, and other surprises. Help Johnny save Tex and make the world a safer place for our pets!

It also recently had a ‘HD’ remake https://www.gog.com/en/game/monster_bash_hd

It’s funny, I never read the synopsis when I was playing this as a child. It never occurred to me that the dog was kidnapped by ‘the count’.

I just ran around saving pets from the zombies!

Maybe because I only ever played the Shareware which was Part 1 only…

Really, this hasn’t been suggested before? Somehow I thought it has. It’s a cute game, but does get repetitive at some point, if I remember correctly.

I know! There are a few early Apogee and ID games which we often talk about on the podcast and reference in other posts which haven’t been officially suggested.

Many of these early platformers do sadly, all mechanics are introduced in the beginning and you just have to put up with them as the dev’s try to fill out the level roster.

I’ve never played through the entire game though, so that would at least be a worthy challenge.

I’ve indirectly suggested it a couple of times as an aside in some other threads.
It’s a real staple of my childhood – I have really fond memories of it. It seems to have never ending variety and creative ideas for levels and enemies.

GOG must be listening, both versions just went on sale. I’ve not played the new HD remake, time to give it a go!

The original is also a part of the Preservation Program, so worth picking that up too to keep that funded.

    On sale until 20/02/2026 🙂
