Have you ever been playing Wing Commander and wished it had a more open world feel to it? Maybe a dash of Star Control 2? Well then Protostar: War on the Frontier might just be for you.

If I remember correctly the project was originally planned to be Starflight 3 but EA turned their noses up at the project, so it’s creators (Tsunami Media) removed everything that would legally tie it to Starflight and shipped it as a new IP.

Like Starflight you roam around a decently large set of stars trying to build diplomatic relations, mining resources, blasting away enemy space ships, and chilling out at space bars chatting with weird aliens…well…one alien…and the conversation can feel a bit one sided at times….ANYWAYS!

The game is pretty cool but for me the real selling point is the soundtrack which I personally think is among the coolest soundtracks of the DOS era. I hope others feel the same. ^.^

I saw this on Home of the Underdogs and might have fired it up once, but didn’t play it. Having played lots of Elite Plus and loads and loads of Star Control 2, I think this game sounds really really cool…

I don’t really recall hearing anything about this game back in the day!

    Oh, yes, yes, yes! =)

I stumbeled upon this around 2000 and was instantly hooked. Sadly RL prevented excessive playing back then.

This game was indeed meant to be Starflight 3. I finished it back in the day despite its awful, awful combat.
