Wing Commander: Privateer + Righteous Fire
-
Hey everyone,
I searched the Episodes + Forum and realized, that one of the most fascinating DOS-Games didn’t appear in my scouting… yet. 😉
There are jsut a few re-reviews in spoken- or YouTube-form out there, so I thought this is a perfect candidate.
If someone never heard about this gem:
According to Wikipedia it’s a “adventure space trading and combat simulator” by Origin in the Wing Commander Universe.
The gameplay itself is analogue to Wing Commander 1+2 and it basically uses the same Engine.
Additionally they included a Upgrade+Buy feature to your ship and trading commodities between planets/stations.
Of course you have a storyline which you can or can’t follow as you wish.
Many consider it a a spiritual successor to ELITE.
Hope some of you can share some experiences with this game or this time-capsule, I would like to hear it! 🙂
Greetings from Germany
It might have fallen off the club’s radar because we did an episode on Winge Commander already. But I feel like the gameplay of this one is different enough to warrant its own episode.
I actually found a copy with manual (no box unfortunately) in an op shop (Australian for thrift shop) about 8 years ago when that sort of thing still sometimes happened.
Nowadays you’d be lucky to find a hidden object game or a sims expansion… but that’s another story.
Oh would love to replay this one again! Such a classic. It had just enough improvements to the WC formula and Elite-style games that I could enjoy it.
Earlier WC games had *terrible* frame-rates, and I have a hard time enjoying sandbox games with no campaign (like Elite and Frontier).
It’s a very different game from normal WC, I had the speech pack and RF bought separately, but later on sent them to Tim to complete his collection.
I would love to play this one again.
I’ll never stop being mad at Righteous Fire. If you know, you know.
I love that there are more people ( than me 😉 ) on this forum who appreciate this game!
For me this was like the first “open world”-experience in the computer-gamingworld, I didn’t have a NES or SNES to play something like Zelda.
Of course when we got this at home I was like 7 and couldn’t figure out what to do, so I quickly got the hexcodes to modify my Savegame for a “better balance” on my account. 😀
Much later, like 1998 or so, I got the CD-ROM Version for 5-10 Bucks and really tried to get through the game in the normal-/”what the developers intended”-way to get through.
Really tough game in many points, even more so in Righteous Fire.
Like one week ago I just ended hearing the Wing Commander Podcast-Episode (still trying to get through every Episode), of course the sequels & Privateer were mentioned, but I think there is still space to elaborate even more on Privateer+Expansion(+maybe even the sequels).
Thank you all guys for the great trip to memory-lane!
Greetings
