I used the club selection as an excuse to finally read one of Feist’s solo-authored books, and saw somewhere that the game was based on the same world but introduced a new story and characters. Sounded good to me to go read the inspiration first.
So I picked up Krondor: The Betrayal and finished it, only to find out from the afterword that this book was the novelization of the game and I should’ve read a different series if I wanted to avoid spoilers. Whoops!
I did enjoy the read, though, which hopefully means I’ll like the game too!
I hear you on how opinions evolve. Seems to apply to a lot of things I enjoyed as a kid, although possibly the biggest factor is how much more impatient I am as an adult. Gaming takes time! And I’ve got less of it now… What were some of your old faves that have held up?
I usually pick these up on GOG — nice and easy, and I hope it encourages them to keep making older games available more widely. I’ve picked up a few boxes on eBay, mostly because I have a fondness for physical manuals when they’ve got a lot of interesting reading material.
Thank you for this! Definitely got me through some frustrating moments without dumping anvils on my head, so to speak.
That was a trip. It took me a while to calibrate to the zaniness and humor (especially once I reached the point where it definitively wasn’t kid-oriented), and as much as I appreciated the quality of the acting, I ended up zipping through the dialog (reading the subtitles instead) to try to tone the intensity down. But once I adjusted to the ridiculosity, things started to click in terms of the story and puzzles.
The bit about the plans for the sequel is interesting — I don’t know if I’d feel compelled to pick it up to continue the adventure, but the direction they went could’ve led to some interesting new mechanics. (Although I already leaned a fair amount on hints, lol.)
