Depending on the version you play the game has a difficulty bug which would reset it to easiest if you load the game during the tactical part. This would later result in Microprose upping the difficulty in the sequel to astronomical level because people were complaining that the game was too easy. I don’t know if there is an easy way to check if the version is buggy or not but I believe it was fixed in the GOG/Steam versions.
