I remember this was released (officially) on Linux very early on and was available from the package manager, it felt wild to have something more than just tux racer or solitaire.

And it looks like it was in Debian since 2.0, so around 1998.

I don’t have personal experience, but I definitely remember Abuse and Linux discussed together back in the day!

Another interesting technical bit I remember being talked about was Lisp being used as a script language in the game.

I played this on Linux when I first switched over. It was really cool seeing something more like a real game (compared to the various gnome-games and xbill).

The next game I ran on Linux was Alpha Centauri a couple of years later.

Oh yes, I also remember it from my early Linux days. It was a bit unusual to control and quite difficult. But nonetheless I played it quite often back then. =)

I’ve never played this game before but I’ve heard of it. I believe it’s because it was one of the few games released on Linux long ago. I always saw it at the top of the games category for Distros.

It is still available in Linux, but as a flatpak:

I had some trouble with the flatpak (I could only see 1/4 of the screen). The linux version that worked for me was Abuse 2025: https://github.com/apancik/Abuse_2025

I learned about this game because it was one of the few games available on Linux besides tux cart and other ones.

Never played the DOS version until now. Seems pretty similar.

Dang, I feel like I missed out. I remember seeing Abuse in maybe scrolling through the games section of synaptic, or maybe it was included in Knoppix or something. Either which way, I never actually tried the game, the little blurb I saw about it did not grab me.
