Looks like there’s no official way to get this game?

Also don’t see many details on PCGamingWiki.

There is this guide which mentions a few patched versions, like removing password or granting more starting credits.

An enhanced port of the Atari ST version called GLFrontier looks interesting, though not even based a DOS port, and folks seem to think it’s still inferior.

Someone mentioned this “Pioneer” fan game is inspired by Frontier.

I just played the OG DOS version for years, that’d would be my recommendation.

Pioneer is indeed a love letter to the game, and is more modern, but I don’t think it’s a 1:1 comparison. I’m not 100% on that, however, as I don’t have as much time with Pioneer.

I think if you wanted the general gist of the gameplay, Pioneer would be fine. If you wanted the nitty and the gritty, run the original.

I’m playing the DOS version on that sharoma frontierverse website labelled ‘Frontier: Elite 2 (Patched)’ and it’s working well so far (not that I’ve got too far).

I have noticed a bug with that version – sometimes when I change screen (eg, to the communications or map) I lose the ability to navigate when I switch back to the flying view (ie, pressing F1). The fix is to save and then reopen… Not sure if anyone else is finding the same?

So after playing the original for a few hours, I think I have to switch to Pioneer, and I played HUNDREDS of hours of the original back in the day.

Now though? It’s just too clunky for my patience.

Nevermind, Pioneer doesn’t have my favorite ship, the Imperial Trader, so back to Frontier it is!

Looks the Sharoma recommends GLfrontier, despite its bugs. IDK which is the least bad version 😅.

It all feels impenetrable to me!
