Is there any fix for the poor frame-rate? Feels like the default in DOSBox-X is like 1-5 FPS at 3000 cycles, especially on planets.

Cycles ‘max’ feels much smoother but then the gameplay feels crazy fast and broken.

I’m just using vanilla DOSBox and finding it perfectly playable at 3000, just like the olden days.

5fps! I would have sold my own mother to the empire for a smooth 5fps. I played this on an amiga500 and there were times where performance slipped from fps to spf

If you open the menu (pause twice in-game) you can set the ‘Level of Shape Detail’ which makes a big difference to framerate near stations and planets.

The CDROM version of the game listed a 386 as *minimum* required cpu, so you’re looking at something like 6000 cycles minimum in dosbox to get acceptable performance, probably.

That said, the versions I’ve tried don’t suffer from a gamespeed scaling problem. Maybe whoever removed the copy protection also patched that? Right now I’m playing at 23000 cycles and it’s perfect. Happy to help you out in IRC if you’re looking for the same particular version I’m playing.

10K cycles seems to work better for me, though it seems really easy to get going so fast it overshoots. I think I’m going to watch some tutorials or read the manual.
