Probably a niche game within the niche.
This might be my favorite dos game since 2020.
I remember playing this back in the day on my pentium 133 with a keyboard.
I was always impressed with the graphics and the ai.
the game was brutal on your computer, even a pentium 200 can’t run this game with all the details.

It was around 2020 when I saw a guy on youtube doing full races live, that resparked my love for the game.
Since then, I also had a steering wheel available. Playing grand prix 2 with a steering wheel is awesome!

For me it is a game that does a great job in sumulating an f1 race while still remaining simple in gameplay.

Now, I play it on a pentium III with windows 98 and a microsoft sidewinder precision racing wheel. fun stuff.

I recently rediscovered GP2 and I’m also loving it! Along with Indycar Racing 2. I used to have problems running them (particularly with my phone, which I often play on). But now I have found Magic DOSBox settings that work, they run like a dream!
Great that you play on original tech.

Finnish YouTuber Ted Meat’s videos might be what you saw. He loves ICR2 and GP2. GP2 particularly represents the feel of the whole F1 ‘weekend’ in a unique way. Both still have active communities which is great, with many mods, extra tracks and carsets available.

It’s amazing how these sims play so well with steering wheel and pedal setups that weren’t invented until decades after the games came out 😀
I don’t have a wheel, but I’m having success with laptop and my old joystick. Virtual joystick on the phone also works, but tough during long races.

With GP2, not having the analogue input of pedals makes accel/braking hard. In fact, without most of the driver aids on I struggle to keep cars on the track! With aids on, it feels a more arcadey experience, but requires input and concentration, but is still exhilarating and great fun.

It was TedMeat indeed. He makes enjoyable videos.
The community around GP2 is surprisingly active.
I guy named hatcher created a mod call x86gp2.

Interesting to read how other people play and enjoy the game.

Haha, love the talk here! I got bitten by the steering wheel and racing games bug a little bit later – a bunch of my internet friends got interested in racing Grand Prix Legends online, and I was swept in as well. It was a great time, even though I absolutely sucked at driving those cars – the brutal difficulty was the main draw. I think in my “career” (over maybe 2-3 years of driving online with said friends!) I made exactly one actual overtake in an actual racing context. My main focus during the races was trying not to mess up anybody else!

I wonder how hard it is to source still working compatible wheels & pedals … but yeah, a racing simulator could be quite fun!
