    Hey y’all,

I’m ainmosni, also known as Daniël, and I live in Berlin although I was born in Amsterdam.

I joined here because I saw Tijn’s link to the DGC on Mastodon and as I have great memories of old DOS games, I decided to listen to the podcast, and enjoyed it enough to first join IRC, and now write an intro post here.

DOS wasn’t my first gaming platform, but it was the first one I really remember. My father used to take me when he visited a friend out of town, and he had a Compaq Luggable (286 version) that he let me play with while my father and him hung out. I played a lot of Prince of Persia during those visits, and when he got a new PC, he gifted the Luggable to my father. I soon learned about adventure games and was especially enchanted with The Secret of Monkey Island.

This love affair with DOS and early windows games continued when I upgraded from the then-ancient Luggable to a Pentium 100, which opened the door to SVGA games (!) with proper sound (!!), and I spent too many hours playing more adventure games, DOOM, Civilization II, and so much more.

I kept that Pentium forever, much longer than people made games that could run on it, and even after I got my next PC, it stayed in service as a router for my cable internet. When I got my next PC, an Athlon 700 if memory serves, I still went back to many DOS and early windows games that I couldn’t play or just missed, which is when I found what might be my all time favourite game from that era: Fallout.

Just like the podcast made me nostalgic for old games, the community has made me rejoin IRC, which I also have lots of fond memories for and reminded me how much nicer IRC is than the sensory barrage that is Discord or Slack. So I will definitely be active in the IRC channel, most likely more active there than on the forum itself, as I have a bad history of keeping up with forums. But I’ll try!

    Willkommen!

Amazing that you kept all that hardware for so long, something many of us now wish we did the same!

Great to have another regular on IRC too!

I look forward to you joining us on the podcast soon too then 😉

DJ_HiP: I sadly have none of it anymore, but I’m not above an emulator or two these days.
