My main train of thought since it was announced is: Where the heck do I get a good joystick/flightstick? 😉

If you are using dosbox, you can remap your usb joystick (for example a xbox or playstation controller) to the dos joystick.

I’m not sure how it works with an analogue stick.

You can find Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2s on Ebay for good prices. If you want I can find a good one for you.

    Cool!!!

I just commented on Settlers II how I was really looking forward to that game, then I saw this one!

I specifically bought a secondhand joystick to replay this game a while ago. I guess it’ll soon be time to hook it up. Looking forward to this.

For me, this is peak Space Sim. I loved this game. I loved ranking up, I loved the secret evil society and ranking up in that.

I havent played this game in 30 years though… and I don’t have a joystick anymore.

I might be enjoying this one from the sidelines.

I think there’s a program that lets you emulate a joystick with a mouse, and maybe you can play it that way? I might be able to remember the name when I come out of this brain fog.

I tried playing via mouse but that didn’t work well. It was manageable for the first missions but then… *boom* 😉

Ugh, I’m sorry. I got this inexpensive stick a little over a year ago to use with my laptop and it’s great:

This topic is totally out of my wheelhouse, so maybe it’s a silly one: how does DOSBox go with modern gamepads with thumbsticks? And how viable is that option for this game?

Edit: gah, just realised this question was already answered earlier in the thread!

I’ve used my PS4 controller for Wing Commander and it worked just fine with Dosbox, so I think it should be possible to do the same with Tie Fighter I would think.

Played this for the first time a couple of years ago – it holds up really well… I found it very challenging, so bought the strategy guide from abebooks. That was about when I lost interest and never finished it. Go figure.

You can borrow the guide at archive.org:

So did buying the guide make you lose interest?

I think, probably not. I bet I would have lost interest anyway. But looking forward to picking it up again. I might try emulation and an xbox controller this time. The joystick on my pentium broke, and I can’t play that from the couch.

Oh yesss! One of my all time favourite games. Played through the original game back in the 90s. It was awsome.

I had a flight stick back then but i have no idea where that thing went. I hope it plays well with a ps4 controller. Doesnt play too well with mouse i figures out a few years ago.

Theres a great lets play of the game + addon from a dutch guy on youtube. Very entertaining, relaxed and funny: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL93064ED57E2E35A4

The GOG version of Tie Fighter works fine with the PS4 controller btw. No configuration required. Just simple plug and play.

I started wondering how I want to play. I probably don’t want to make it _too_ complicated so I don’t end up not playing at all. So maybe the GOG.com version with a modern joypad. But I do have a Thrustmaster USB stick with a few buttons and a tiny throttle lever, which could be quite fun to play with.. (I played the demo with a Gravis Analog joystick back in the day..)

I’ve never tried it with a gamepad, but it’s probably doable.

I’ve jumped in and started playing recently. It’s been a long time since I first played, don’t think I got very far. Definitely making better progress now!

I got the GoG package, and I’m mainly playing the basic 1994 version via Magic DOSBox on my phone (as usual).
My Bluetooth controller works with this setup, which is good as the MD virtual joystick is very sensitive.
A lot of buttons to map though!

I’m assuming the other 1995/1998 releases aren’t technically DOS compatible? Think I tried with X-Wing ages ago with no luck. I’m trying the 98 on the laptop (with Cyborg 3D stick) and it’s very nice to look at…
What versions are you guys running for this DGC playthrough? Purist DOS, or Windows for the fancy graphics?

Man, as much as I love MDB on my tablet, I cannot imagine playing this one with it. Too much muscle memory with a stick and keyboard.

The 95/98 releases are Windows-specific, built on the XvT engine, I believe.

Playing this on a touchscreen is certainly a challenge! I play full screen with buttons overlaid – and there are a lot of buttons to fit!
    Working well though.
One thing I’ve found is that while the virtual joystick is quite sensitive, I can get fine control with my finger on the screen, like virtual mouse control is always active.
    Very effective for dogfighting!
