How’s it going so far?

I must admit that… I am still on the ground floor. I have only really played for half an hour or so, but I find this surprisingly terrifying. I was not expecting a jump scare immediately upon leaving the first room, lol. The combat seems very, uh, “quirky”, so I think I need to spend some time practising that before getting stuck in properly. I am already getting Resident Evil vibes, i.e. it is probably more sensible to run away than fight, most of the time.
Even though it’s cheap on GOG even without a sale, I’ve really got to save my pennies right now, so I settled for just watching an extended review/playthrough on youtube for this game.
It seems like a really cool game, but I don’t think I would have had the patience to play it all the way through, so my approach I think was for the best.
I won’t give any spoilers, but my takeaway from the video was that brute force is the worst way to deal with enemies, and that there’s a clever puzzle way to deal with or avoid most of them.

I’ve been chipping away at it and I think I’m getting somewhere near the end. I’m kind of at the stage where I’ve explored just about everywhere I can get to but haven’t found uses for all the objects yet and need to drag them between the bespoke rooms that are dotted around. I’ve piled huge numbers of things in the entrance hall of the mansion for retrieval as and when I need them. I’ve concerns about losing some required item and not being able to beat the game so hopefully this will avoid that.
The biggest issue I have is the inventory being so small (even with the briefcase). It’s realistic but I’m having to go back and forth all the time. Lots of the monsters in the game appear to require specific weapons or items. It’s all very puzzly for an RPG.
I do enjoy the general atmosphere. It’s certainly scarier than Halloween Harry last year. The plot is a little sparse for my liking but has more to it than the likes of Eye Of The Beholder or Dungeon Master at least. I prefer this game to either of those I think. I love having the automap in this one – there is something so satisfying about filling in a map on blobbers.
If you want to make your life easier, the character data for initial setup is stored in a text file amongst the files. You can change the starting stats in here upping them to 9 before you create your character if you want an easy mode.

I dove into the mansion this weekend for the first time. It seems alright, is my first impression! I like the windowing system, and the fact it cuts right to the chase.
Can’t say I’ve really figured out how to effectively take out the monsters though haha
I’ll keep at it!
