It seems like a long time since I had any reviews to scan in but we have a few for this month. Two of them love it, PC Format wasn’t too keen. Can’t say I ever played much of Frontier so looking forward to finding out for myself this month.

It’s always great to see these, thank you for providing them! I still want to clear time to read through the entire PC Zone catalogue eventually 🙂

I’m surprised at how good this game still looks.

Awesome scans, Pix! I think the first one (from PCReview) is missing a page between 0003 and 0004.

What, no manual docking??? That was the entire point of the original Elite! To spend 10 minutes getting to the planet, fighting pirates along the way, spend 3 more minutes aligning yourself perfectly to the space station, then crash and die because your finger twitched and you ended up five degrees off the mark.

You’re right about the missing page – it’s there now.

    Thanks!

What strikes me as peculiar is that PCReview was praising the game’s graphics and performance on a 386DX-33 on maximum settings, while PCFormat was bashing it, claiming that it is slow as molasses on a 486SLC-25 on minimum settings.

Either Cyrix’s variant of 486SLC is really awful, or there was some other important configuration difference between the machines…

The cyrix was missing the math co-processor that the DX had, so it was closer to the 386SX in performance. It also had a 16-bit bus vs. the i486 32-bit bus.
