One of my favourite DOS games this month, although I’m more partial to X-Wing personally. Tie Fighter was fairly easy to play through when you’d spent weeks mastering X-Wing already so was a bit of a brief experience at the time. X-Wing has the advantage of the death star battle to build up to which made for a suitable ending. Also, the ships were a little more satisfying to fly/learn + shooting smaller fasters tie fighters is way more fun than sitting on the tail of a Y-Wing slowing chipping it’s shields down. There were definitely improvements with Tie Fighter though (time compression for one) and it’s probably a lot more accessible for new players.
On to the scans and rather than recreate them all here, I’ll link to a post I created years back at https://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/x-wing-series-magazine-scans/ That’s got a ton of scans for the whole series through to X-Wing Alliance along with interviews with Larry Holland and the like from various UK magazines.
X-wing was so hard. I recall getting about half way through and just giving up on one particularly hard mission.
Tie Fighter felt more approachable from what I recall.
X-Wing was so hard, in the Win95 version, one of the bullet points on the back was that some missions were easier than the original.
