I did the occasional level of my home of school in Duke 3D, but my thought always was – I spend all day at these places, why would I want to go there in a videogame? I want to make something cool and weird and different!
I loved all level editors. I didn’t care if they were 3D, 2D or whatever. I just liked getting creative with the engine and seeing if I could make something that looked good and was fun to play.
I mucked about with the abuse level editor back in the day. I thought it was cool how easily you could switch between building and testing, but it also kind of confused me.
I think the main thing that held me back from using it more is just how samey the visuals were. I wanted (and still do) a variety of different tilesets and biomes and things to give me the biggest amount of creative freedom.
