Did anyone here participate in the level design contest Crack Dot Com ran with the initial release of Abuse? I remember seeing stuff all over the place both in the big box edition but also on their website way back when about it. Apparently there was a cash prize. I don’t think I ever knew anyone who submitted a map to them though.

It sounds familiar. I do recall poking around the level editor, and found it impressive. Though hard to compete with Build from Duke 3D.

I mean, to be fair it was a 2D side scroller when we were all fawning over 3D engines, so yeah. Valid.

Haha I can’t imagine what the appeal would be to make a 2d scroller custom map. With 3d editors we were all excited to do our home, school, LAN-party etc, but in a 2d scroller like Abuse that would be so crazy boring

I did the occasional level of my home of school in Duke 3D, but my thought always was – I spend all day at these places, why would I want to go there in a videogame? I want to make something cool and weird and different!

I loved all level editors. I didn’t care if they were 3D, 2D or whatever. I just liked getting creative with the engine and seeing if I could make something that looked good and was fun to play.

I mucked about with the abuse level editor back in the day. I thought it was cool how easily you could switch between building and testing, but it also kind of confused me.

I think the main thing that held me back from using it more is just how samey the visuals were. I wanted (and still do) a variety of different tilesets and biomes and things to give me the biggest amount of creative freedom.
