Other games with this control scheme?

I think this is an awfully clever way to do a run and gun on the PC, but I’ve only ever played one another game like it. Indie PC game Intrusion 2, which is the sequel to a flash game I never played. In retrospect very clearly inspired by Abuse.
It’s highly unorthodox for 2D games, so you have to ask yourself why.
There is a strand of Japanese indie titles that also have this control schemr. They also have twin-stick controls on modern gamepads. I’ve played “Steel Strider” and “Mechblaze”.

There was a LAN game we’d sometimes play called Soldat that used the same type of control scheme.

The game that leaps to mind for me is Cannon Fodder, isometric rather than side on but it had essentially the same controls a few years earlier.
I’m amazed I didn’t think of Soldat!

Hey I just remembered one. Slipped my mind because it’s not exactly mouse and keyboard (but you could 100% do it with mouse and keyboard.)
The Wii game Sin and Punishment: Star Successor is a run and gun that uses the nunchuck for your movement, and the Wii remote as your pointing device for where your character aims. The perspective shifts over the course of the game, sometimes it’s a rail shooter, but for a large chunk of the game it is a 2D run and gun.
I highly recommend it. It’s by Treasure, the studio you might know as the creators of Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga.

Oh wow this reminds me a bit of Heavy Weapon Deluxe. Though that one is mouse only and has graphics that actually look better despite being released in 2005. 😛
One that I’ve played a bit (hours and hours way back when) is Tee-worlds, (https://teeworlds.com/). It has a very similar control scheme as far as I recall…
I remember it was a super fast and fun 2d multiplayer shooter
