If you’re looking to get into a Fallout state of mind before we play the game, allow me to recommend A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

It’s a novel about a Catholic monastery roughly 700 years after the Flame Deluge. The monks have a quiet, contemplative medieval life, illuminating hand-copied manuscripts of 20th century math and science textbooks, although they have long since forgotten the fundamentals needed to understand the texts. They live in fear of demons written of hundreds of years ago called Fallouts.

Tim Cain cites the book as an inspiration for Fallout. Here’s a small excerpt:

A spiritu fornicationis, Domine, libera nos.
From the lightning and the tempest, o Lord, deliver us.
…
From the place of ground zero, o Lord, deliver us.
From the rain of the cobalt, o Lord, deliver us.
From the rain of the strontium, o Lord, deliver us.

Fully agree with that recommendation – “A Canticle for Leibowitz” is a great read and the Fallout’s Brotherhood of Steel took inspiration from the monk order of the book.

I would also recommend to watch “A Boy and his Dog” from 1975, which gave the inspiration for underground Vaults everpresent in Fallout universe.

And while you’re at it, why not also watch Kubrick’s “Dr Strangelove”, which I feel shares a lot of humour with the series ;P

Strong second on Dr. Strangelove. There’s also a really neat found footage documentary called The Atomic Cafe.
