Maybe RPGs aren’t the best for a one-month trial period – but I have fond memories of many RPGs so I will suggest them anyway:)

    Dark Sun: Shattered Lands
    Legend
    Betrayal at Krondor

Never heard of any of those, but that’s what the club is there for.

How about some Ultima? I think all the older versions have had ports to DOS. Not sure if there was one that was originally released on DOS?

I’d be up for some Ultima! Played some of them, struggled to get others running, never finished any!

It would be cool to have an RPG in an upcoming month (January?)!

I’ve played *loads* of Dark Sun by the way. It’s a really cool game. I haven’t played so much other RPGs. I’d love to dive into Krondor or Ultima, but also maybe one of the Might & Magic games would be interesting? Or Dune 1 possibly? Fallout is also a big one of course, but maybe too mainstream (we’ve covered a lot of big games recently).

If anyone has anymore suggestions, that would be great!

    KEEF THE THIEF

Naughty Dog’s first game and notable for having been made with placeholder text that was supposed to be replaced with generic fantasy garbage but they decided what they had was so funny they should keep it.

Keith the Thief looks perfect: attractive and rather silly. I vote that!

I saw your request for RPG suggestions on Twitter. There are so many! I don’t know where to start. From my point of view, I’d love to go for one of the classics I’ve never played. Betrayal At Krondor would fit the bill perfectly. Or failing that Might and Magic 1 or Wizardry 1 would be great. There is a tool available to add automapping and other bells and whistles to those last 2 which makes them way more accessible.

I’d also quite like to play Superhero League of Hoboken or any of the gold box games. The same goes for Darklands. RPG’s are always such a time investment that there are loads of classics like this I’ve never got around to having a go at.

Origin games are kind of my specialist subject and you wouldn’t go far wrong with an Ultima. They did a few more obscure RPG’s in the 80’s if that’s what you are after. 2400AD is a fun little game in the Ultima style except with a sci-fi instead of fantasy setting. The best non-Ultima RPG they did was AutoDuel which is a car combat RPG based on Steve Jackson’s Car Wars in a Mad Max setting. Autoduel is a bit of a classic for it’s time. I’d definitely recommend it if you don’t mind a 1985 game.

The Legacy is an underlooked gem. It’s a Lovecraft inspired first person horror RPG. Would be a good one for an October.

I could keep going but I’ll stop at that.

Some good choices I think would be:

    A Bards Tale
    Darklands
Eye of the Beholder (of the D&D flavour)
Any of the Might and Magic
    Wasteland

Wow everyone is in this thread so I can’t help but jump in too! I’d eagerly welcome an RPG to the list!

I did play Betrayal at Krondor as a kid, but I was pretty young and I didn’t really “get it” at the time. I never made it very far.

I have always wanted to play Wasteland! I’m a big Fallout fan, played them all a lot.

I am VERY partial to the Ultima series. Ultima V sits just under Starflight in regards to my favorite memories of gaming with my dad. Ultima Rules!

So my vote goes for Wasteland, or Ultima… but admittedly that Keef the Thief sounds pretty funny too, and I’ve never heard of it!

Oh, Wasteland! If it would win, I will finally have enough motivation for playing it (I got it after I backed up Wasteland 2, and never played that game [and yeah, I already backed up Wasteland 3, what can I say?]).

Definitely down to play some RPGs. In another thread I have already suggested Albion and it would be a good fit too. It is quite long though.

Oh, I recently stumbled across a new game coming out, Underworld Ascendant, which is the spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld. I never actually played an Ultima Underworld game (short of messing about in the gog version for all of 15 minutes), and would love an excuse to give one an honest shot. I hear the 1st one is the best one.

Again, I’m stoked on any Ultima, even thinking of having to choose which Ultima to play seems painfully difficult!

Thanks for all the awesome suggestions, everyone! I think we’re going to go for Wasteland for this particular occasion. A lot of people seem interested in checking that out and with the release of Fallout 76 it also seems relevant.

But don’t think this is the last RPG we’ll ever play, so I’m sure we’ll be looking at this list again in the future 🙂
