On sale now:
https://www.gog.com/en/game/sam_max_hit_the_roadIf you do use scummvm, use the latest version, don’t use the packaged version.
January 30, 2026 at 1:00 am #11297Or you could just use the copy your friend loaned to you about 15 years ago that you still haven’t given back.
Oh wait, that’s just me!
dr_stParticipantFebruary 2, 2026 at 4:58 pm #11327Just bought it on GOG, because why not? Thanks for the tip!
I also own the physical copy from the White Label Doubles (which came with Day of the Tentacle):

stdevelParticipantFebruary 11, 2026 at 7:27 pm #11369Interesting! Is it the CD or floppy version? Any differences from the conventional box release? Appreciate those combo releases from back then 🙂

butterburpParticipantFebruary 12, 2026 at 5:07 am #11374It’s the CD version, with full voice throughout! But I actually turn the voice off to bring back memories of the floppy version, haha.
Differences: from looking at the GOG discussion, there’s no copy protection anymore, and the music is somewhat compressed. To be honest I didn’t notice either one (and yes I’m getting a head start for April)

dr_stParticipantFebruary 12, 2026 at 9:14 pm #11383The White Label release is the CD version. You can see the contents in this picture:
https://i.postimg.cc/W3L9pNQf/SAM-0316.jpgI think the main difference between it and the original CD release is that the manual cover is black&white, and the hintbook is not included.

Evil TacoParticipantMarch 7, 2026 at 10:18 am #11488I bought the GOG version, which technically is not the DOS version but a ScummVM package that doesn’t include the executable.
Since I now own _a_ copy of the game I feel justified downloading the DOS version from archive.org, just so I can run it through the DOSBox Staging’s VGA CRT filter which has become _that_ extra sprinkle of fairy dust that makes the experience feel _that_ crucial extra bit nostalgic to me.
I have the good old family 486sx but no CD-ROM drive, plus I’m starting to become a bit scared of turning that thing on (it has some issues with the image already, a bit sad the thing is practically rotting on me).

dr_stParticipantMarch 7, 2026 at 9:31 pm #11490I really should try those VGA CRT filters! Thanks for the tip. How exactly does one enable those on DOSBox-staging?

butterburpParticipantMarch 8, 2026 at 2:02 am #11491Per the release notes, it’s already enabled out of the box! (Note current release is actually 82.2)
https://www.dosbox-staging.org/releases/release-notes/0.81.0/Phil(‘s Computer Lab) also did a series on Dosbox-S. The first one was about video, where he said CRT is still the best, but DB is catching up. He was more impressed with the audio capabilities, including Adlib Gold:

dr_stParticipantApril 4, 2026 at 9:50 am #11660I’ve started playing my CD copy, with an image mounted in DOSBox, using the CRT shaders. It looks nice for sure. 😎
Correct me if I’m missing something – the CD audio tracks on the disc can only be listened to via the main menu? The game still only uses FM/MIDI music?
