After TIE Fighter I craved some more use for my Logitech Attack 3 I dug out.
I decided to give Subwar a whirl. Thanks to this thread on GOG forums I was able to get the throttle working: https://www.gog.com/forum/subwar_2050_complete/joystick_issues
I’ve now played the couple first training missions, but I definitely need some supplemental materials to really get into the game. Definitely didn’t understand what the wireframe red thing was (thermal layer) without reading up a bit!
The manual and the in-universe magazine help a lot – I don’t think I’ve witnessed the MicroProse manual & extra materials first hand previously. I guess I always played their games pirated back in the day, whoops! I’m impressed that they have a whole multi-page “history of submarines” section in there, complete with made up history from 90s onwards. Respectable!
After understanding the game a little better, it feels very atmospheric. It’s sparse, I wouldn’t mind a bit more sound, but it’s cool. Comparing to TIE Fighter doesn’t help, but it does manage to make the underwater aspect feel unique. I started listening to the Club episode (which is great!) hoping to ignite the spark a little bit better. Particle Systems is a fascinating company. Gotta go suggest I-War/Independence War for the Windows Game Club I guess!
