Does anyone know how you speed up in Andy Asteroids? I don’t doubt I’ve missed something obvious.

I found the Esc key thing the hard way. I was trying to get to the options menu to change some things like key mapping. And boom! All progress lost.

I’m now up to “What The Heck” (the second platforming stage). There’s a section I can’t get past where you’ve got to hook your head around a gold hook, jump, then do it again in succession. Talk about tedious and frustrating. I think that’s enough Earthworm Jim for today.

You’re doing better than me. I’ve spent about an hour with the game so far and I can’t pass the first level. I keep dying on the pig boss who spews fish. Maybe I’ve lost my touch (I played a lot of these kinds of games as a kid) but I’m finding EWJ to be pretty challenging. I’ll keep at it.

I played a little EWJ2 and found that pretty hard too. I’m stuck at the part of the stairs elevator.

I use emulation for the most part, because there’s no single PC like there was C64 etc. It means I’d have to choose which spec to go for carefully. Maybe a late Pentium or Pentium II would be a good choice for a good all rounder?

I’ve just remembered I have an Epson QX-11 complete with green mono monitor, all in their original boxes. With its 8086 CPU, I don’t think it will play many games apart from text adventures. Truth me told I have never turned it on as when I turned on an old Commodore PC someone gave me, it released magic smoke.

That’s right – I forgot about Tempest 2000. I played the DOS version quite a bit over the years. But I’ve since bought Tempest 4000 which has surpassed 2000 in every way.

I gave Llamatron a go last night and enjoyed it a fair bit. I’ll keep it installed for times I want a quick shooty arcade game.

Have you played Akka Arrh or iRobot?

I really enjoyed his iOS version of Gridrunner and then all his follow up iOS games, including one that was like Llamatron (Minotron 2112). Unfortunately they’re all pulled from the App Store now.

I’ll have to have a look at what he’s done on DOS.

I played the Amiga version of Alien Breed some time ago on an emulator and while I didn’t get far, I certainly enjoyed it. How does the DOS version compare? The early 90s was that fascinating period where the PC was starting to overtake the Amiga in games but from memory the Amiga got an ECS version too, so I’m not sure.

I’ve not heard of it, though I certainly remember the original Elite on the 8-bit computers of the day. This looks like a game I’ll need to read through the manual first. Looking forward to giving it a try.

Yeah I agree. There’s a few games like that on GoG. Another example is Sim City 2000. The Windows 95 and Mac versions were superior, but the version on GoG is the DOS version. I guess you’re right that it’s just easier for them to wrap up the DOS version, but they somehow got games like Carmageddon 2 working which never had a DOS release from memory.
