I think the sign-up form is working again now. My colleague had a look and couldn’t see any issues on the backend, and I was able to sign up with one of my personal email addresses a few hours ago, so perhaps it was just a temporary glitch or a bigger Beehiiv-wide error that’s been resolved.

Damn, thanks for letting me know about the form breaking (which seems crazy to me, as we’re using the Beehiiv newsletter platform as backend). I don’t have access to the site to investigate, but I’ve reported it to my colleagues. Will post back once it’s working again.

Since I literally wrote the book on football games history, it’s about time I finally chimed in here instead of just checking for new posts every time I drop by to lurk the forums.

As noted by others, there were a fair number of notable management games that made their way to DOS, including the Championship Manager, Premier Manager, and Ultimate Soccer Manager series, and FIFA was on DOS for its first few years as well. Likewise, the first Actua Soccer was a big hit on DOS.

Football Fanatic, mentioned above, is a good freeware one, as were the New Era Software games like One-Nil (which had a match engine with textmode graphics!).

Others include The Soccer Wizard (another freeware game), the Supremo series, Ubisoft’s Action Soccer, and a cool Korean game called Super Action Ball.

So there’s lots that could be talked about, both commercial games and from the freeware/shareware scene. If it’s ever decided to do an episode on this topic, I’d be happy to come on and lend my expertise to the discussion.
