    not strictly real DOS but I’ve been using the DOSBox-Pure core on LAKKA (Retroarch). my LAKKA install runs on a Chromebox CN60 i7 with 4 GB RAM in a tiny little form factor.

    you can run and configure most games from ZIP or image file and controller support for most games is simple.

    fantastic! has inspired me to find some of my mags!

    thanks 😉

    <edit>

    found a few magazine reviews from 1995 including PC Gamer (Imagine) from October ’95. review features several images which must have been part of the press kit as they reappear in other contemporary reviews.

    notable is the inclusion of the flying dragon in screen shots which was eventually omitted.

    here’s the cover, will scan the content in the office tomorrow 😉

    potentially divisive question as results vary.

    Darkplaces with high res textures for a modern but authentic feel. the physics are a little off but it’s pretty.

    QuakeSpasm gameplay compares with Fodquake in terms of graphical look and options, and supports the single player campaign. It’s a cross-platform Quake 1 engine based on FitzQuake. John Romero refers to this as “one of the best source ports”.

    ezQuake is interesting and if not a vastly different take. still very worth looking at.

    I recall three truly memorable mods:

    Cujo – mod for the standard single player experience. adds op attack dog (with custom skin) as AI co-op.

    ReaperBot – great back story here which lead to Unreal Engine. is an AI opponent for offline multiplay.

    Requiem – Quake World mod which introduced new maps / skins / weapons (with best grappling hook mod)

    added extra mention of the Quake chess mod too!
