drbockwurstParticipantThe Podcast lacks flight-Sims, I’m totally for it. 🙂
Especially the whole copy-protection / plane-facts at the start is very special and gives me good memories of me as a kid-smartass. 😀
Also the whole Soundcard-Compatibilities in this game are quite unique, there were just a few games that support the Disney-Soundsystem via Parallelport.
Cool suggestion, thanks for that!
drbockwurstParticipantNice, I got really great memories with this one! 🙂
You got my vote sir 😀
drbockwurstParticipantFor everyone who didn’t got this on his radar, there is a new Fan-Port Project for X-Wing (and Tie Fighter in the future):

I just tested it and did the firest couple of Tours of Duty Missions, it’s a great feeling.
They also did a Remastered-Soundtrack, which also reacts kind of like the iMuse-System.
I’m kind of sad that to this moment you can’t use a external Device (or system-software) to patch the MIDI directly to it.
At least they implemented a way to load in Sound Fonts in SF2.
If you’re interested yourself, there is a Alpha-Build for Windows & Linux on MODDB:https://www.moddb.com/mods/xwvm

drbockwurstParticipantI love that there are more people ( than me 😉 ) on this forum who appreciate this game!
For me this was like the first “open world”-experience in the computer-gamingworld, I didn’t have a NES or SNES to play something like Zelda.
Of course when we got this at home I was like 7 and couldn’t figure out what to do, so I quickly got the hexcodes to modify my Savegame for a “better balance” on my account. 😀
Much later, like 1998 or so, I got the CD-ROM Version for 5-10 Bucks and really tried to get through the game in the normal-/”what the developers intended”-way to get through.
Really tough game in many points, even more so in Righteous Fire.Like one week ago I just ended hearing the Wing Commander Podcast-Episode (still trying to get through every Episode), of course the sequels & Privateer were mentioned, but I think there is still space to elaborate even more on Privateer+Expansion(+maybe even the sequels).
Thank you all guys for the great trip to memory-lane!
Greetings

Yeah that’s the 486 with the classy yellowing-style possibly from a smoking household (at least it doesn’t smell that bad) 😀
Got it in 2023 for roundabout 170,-€ with the mouse+keyboard in the picture & some random graphics-card, it also has a VESA-Localbus Slot from which I knew nothing until I saw it in there.
Real Old-Hardware isn’t that cheap anymore, but it’s so fun… 🤷🏽♀️
drbockwurstParticipantThanks for the warm welcome!
If I can help out or provide anything, just let me know. 🙂
drbockwurstParticipantDamn you guys have such clean retro-Setups, I’m nearly to emberresed to show pics of mine. 😀
I’ve got bassically 2,5 “old” PCs:– “Retro”-PC 0,5 – HP ThinClient t5710 (800mhz) –
Can run Win9X-WinXP Stuff and has a extra PCI Slot where I connect my Voodoo 2 Card.
I call it a 0,5, because it’s more modern Hardware that we didn’t have back then, so calling it cheating would be fair (and has just little to do with DOS-Gaming). 😉– Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CTD with Docking-Station (133 mhz) –
This is a machine capable of playing stuff until the Win98 era, so also for more advanced DOS-Games.
It also has a parallel-Port, where I tested my OPL3LPT Soundcard & Dreamblaster S2P from Serdashop.
Had a lot of fun doing this.– 486 DX2 (80mhz) –
That was my last eBay-Acquisition in this regard, some time ago.
I upgraded it with a Soundblaster Vibra 16S (OPL-Chip) and later with a PicoGUS 2.0 from Serdashop.
This is a real great combination using the included MIDI-Port directly with my 3 Soundmodules KORG 05R/W, Roland RA 50 (native MT32-Compatible) & SC-55mkII.
If someone wants a sample from a specific MIDI-File or Game, just let me know and I will see what I can do. 🙂I’ll just stop there, my rabbit-hole goes much farther to Atari, Macs and Consoles, but that’s a story for another time… 😀
Have a nice day everyone!
drbockwurstParticipant@watchful thanks for the link, I’ve just heard about the new SNES & Mega Drive 32X Ports, but didn’t know anything about this one for the 3DO.
As soon as I get my little Retro-Corner running again, this will be the first thing I’ll try! 🙂
drbockwurstParticipantYeah totally, this game is a must for DOS-Gamers, you have my vote sir! 🙂
I remember liking & being frustated at the same time by X-Wing back in the day.
When I first played Tie Fighter (nearly) everything frustrating from X-Wing was removed and pure joy+fun was left on the table.
Definitely one of the best DOS-Games.
If someone is interested how Tie Fighter sounds on a KORG 05R/W (General MIDI), I uploaded some footage on YouTube 2-3 years ago.

drbockwurstParticipantHey everyone, this is my first forum-post, hoping I don’t come accross as too annoying. 😉
Just a couple of years ago (roundabout 2021) I “treated” myself with a 3do / Panasonic FZ-10 from Japan.
Just gonna say: this was a weird rabbithole to get into. 🙂
Of course one of the first things I had to checkout was the Doom-Port and it was a wild ride…
First of all, the initial presentation is great, especially the music.
Just when you start the first Level, is where it starts to crumble.
How about a big screen-frame to keep a “good” framerate on the hardware?
The controls are also the worst, I’m not too sure if you can get a better exprerience with 3rd-Party Controllers.
For a kid playing Doom in the original Port on a 486 back in the day, I’m not so sure this Port would have done anything for me back then.
I attached some screenshots from my OBS-Records, if you want to see more I can provide more footage.
I’m exited to hear about many other wild Port-experiences of you all.
Best regards from Germany
