Last I’ve done one, I’ve included UFO – Enemy Unknown, Death Rally, Prince of Persia, Quest for Glory collection (it would be between 1 and 4) and Cryo’s Dune.

I have an idea for this, what about a “call-in” show with people from different countries leaving messages about their stories and their memories about gaming magazines, with sone Martijn and Florian comments in between? Could be an ongoing project, keep accepting submissions until there’s enough different countries (and different experiences) and material to work with.

It’s a game I absolutely adored at the time it came out (it was maybe one of my first 3/4 games for pc), even if kinda needs some cheats to be played in a bit less hectic fashion – it has tons of micromanagement, and it locks a few functions and maps behind the difficulty level.

I remember at the time Dave Perry was very openly criticising developers who took shortcuts with early 3D accelerator cards and promised he was working on something with a software renderer that would absolutely blow them out of the water, and to be honest, they did just that. While sniping is mostly just a set piece on some bits, it is as smooth as promised and the game runs exceptionally well for a late DOS game. A bit short and tough, but it’s certainly one of the best non-fps action games for computers at the time.

If any of you has it on GOG, check the booklet in the extras, there’s a lot of cool stuff there that was likely the press package, a magazine here had a full preview on the game that in retrospect was just bits of concept art, screenshots and interviews available on that booklet of the special edition. Plus, I think it’s the one I’ve sent them.

I remember looking in awe at the Mega CD walkthrough the local official SEGA magazine had of it, probably what turned me into Dune years before watching the Lynch movie and reading the book. And along the way, finding the budget CD release (I’ve been playing a floppy version, the lip-synching they did was a technological achievement in itself), a unopened Mega CD (which I opened thinking it had the music on Redbook audio, which is one of the best I’ve heard) and the DOS box with the pop-up worm.

It’s one of those games that only Cryo would have the guts to make that way. Not a straightforward adventure game, not a strategy heavy game, but one that does balance both aspects pretty neatly.

It’s a game I’m kinda surprised to just have eluded me for ages until I’ve seen the MeansTV Preserving Worlds episode on it. As someone who was very much tracing DOS gaming history in the early 2000s, realising I never noticed it was a bit shocking, given the size of the community it had.

There’s a CDRom version (I got mine in the early 2000s, the Virgin White Label edition).

It’s not a great adventure game (some mechanics are pretty questionable) BUT it does a lot of things pretty well – the music is great (used to have a rip on my laptop), the story really tries to do something way beyond what most other companies did at the time and by the end you really feel kinda trapped by the situations that brought you there… As you should. It did a lot of things differently, took some risks and at the very least came out with an interesting game.

I usually skip the SCI VGA remakes because it’s a bit weird to play the first in VGA, then play the sequel(s) back in EGA or early VGA until they were contemporary with the remakes. Always felt a bit weird how Space Quest and Larry 2 and 3, QfG and Police Quest 2 and who knows how many Kings Quest games have this weird jump you’re supposed to ignore.
Plus, I generally prefer the pixel art of earlier games, and some of the older games seem more unstable and prone to crashing, but that’s just me.
