in reply to: How Civ 1 actually works #12053

I remember vividly, when I first got a hold of Civ 1 to Amiga, that we had numerous theories and routines around how to get past the intro (world-building) sequence and just start playimg!

Perhaps this button or these? Couple of mouseclicks perhaps? Yes! It worked – one time. However, not the next time. We didn’t realize that it was just building the world and needed its time 😄

Of course, I also wondered about the battle result mysteries or the when triremes would sink or not.
I thoroughly loved Civ 1 and the series overall is clearly my favorite of all time. Can’t say I remember I picked up on the Gandhi myth at the time, though, but I obviously heard about it later. I also seem to recall there were no loading in-game, but you had to go to the main menu. Bit odd and annoying, but less save-scummy, I suppose?

    Can’t wait for the episode!🥳

Oh man! Can’t wait for this one. You guys have by the way become my go-to podcast whenever I need to zone out.

I met the Civ series with Civ 1 on Amiga around 1991 and it hit me instantly. Later I became first a strategy gamer, then studied history amd then archaeology, where I now sport a PhD on the Syro-Mesopotamian Bronze Age. So the whole thing might have just started with this game!

I followed the series closely through the years and – in the same vein – when I finally got a 486 I played Colonization for 16 hrs straight. When playing Civ 4, I couldn’t imagine a better Civ. Then came Civ 5 and I couldn’t imagine a better Civ. Then Civ 6, which I might have over 4000 hrs in. Then came Civ 7…. And I had to return in disappointment to Civ 6, haha. But I still remember Civ 1 with a lot of nostalgic love still.

As others mentioned above, please tell me if I can contribute in any way. I might send an audio at least, but when is the recording/deadline?

    Cheers!

Definitely +1 for me as well. Played both no. 1 and this one, but the first game had the same map every game. Baded my first real D&D campaign map as GM on a random Warlords 2 map. Rhakwood, dollarone, that was from Warlords 2 👍🏻 Fun, fun game in the early 90s!

YES! This game must be added to the list. What an excellent game. How come we never played this game together, dollarone? I believe I didn’t know you as early as 1991-92. We definitely should do it, so perhaps you could join the podcast for the episode. As you can see from the pic, I am a fan. Me and Alex played it to death (figuratively and game-ily).
