Great game. Skirted the line between RPG, Action-Adventure, FPS and point and clicks; so a bit challenging to categorise

The setting and ambience were fairly unique at that time too.

Would love to replay through this

Like many Bullfrog titles – the sequel was the more polished version with more streamlined UIs and gameplay mechanics – would recommend DK2 as a result.

But echo what everyone is saying – this remains fun and accessible even now

Loved the setting and gameplay but also found it frustrating. What would be a super hidden secret door in any other game is often the main way forward in the game!

    Still a blast to play.

This has that distinctive feel that French developers like Coktel Vision and Cryo etc often gave their games.

    Always found this compelling

The killer is not voolf it is vervoolf!

I always loved that the Gabriel knight games wove real world locations and history into their stories. Turns out I learned a lot about Ludwig II, Munich and Wagner through this game.

This is possibly my favorite game trilogy although I have to admit the third ‘jumped the shark’ with that moustache puzzle (possibly killed off the entire genre for a while!)

This was highly atmospheric – they really polished the formula with the sequel Skynet though, made the first game feel like a beta

Amazing game – the multiple options to hack, find passcodes, break through to approach the scenarios almost feels like a precursor to Deus Ex, only in an isometric view

My vote for FMV based adventure games would be Gabriel Knight: The beast within (But only after playing the first game – which is not FMV)

The Under a killing moon series is quite good though

It was also timing – the voice support allowed a lot more personality to be injected which would not have been possible previously. The Guardian from the later Ultima games is a possible contender from around that era.

Kane from the Command and Conquer series.

Also, not a singular character but the Kilrathi from the Wing Commander games got fleshed out quite well through the series
