I am currently catching up on podcasts, sadly I am a year behind, but am listening to the Eye of the Beholder episode. You all mention Might and Magic heavily as a big series in the Dungeon Crawl genre, and I couldn’t agree more!

Just decided I might need to bump this one a bit… and beg to play this one in the club once more!

I know I’m late to the conversation, but I started by sitting down and reading the entire manual. It was a commitment, but I at least had the concepts of the game floating somewhere in my mind so when something came up, I knew there was at least something I could do about it. This did help me quite a bit in my first run through.

In full honesty though, this is the first 4X/Civilization like game I have ever played. So what I thought was user-unfriendly at first, may just be how these types of games play…

That is a cool touch. I like it when devs commit to the world they are building and put in things like this that, as you play more and more, you can pick up on, or even decipher. This is a huge plus in my mind.

Hah! I missed the first sale and preempted the second… Oh well, still less that $10. Great price, but so far the commitment to read the manual is intense!

I’ve always wanted to take a crack at this one but always seem to be playing something else at the time, or just plain find something else to do. I would be awesome to give myself a deadline to get through this one!

I know i am in the minority here, but I really liked the story of The 11th Hour. To me it added to the weirdness and unknown that is Stauf. I was sad to see the story not go beyond this one as it would have to ditch the house and come up with another way Stauf could haunt the world.

I have always felt that the slow pace was in the game for immersion. It seems to me that if the puzzle animations were faster, it would break the flow and feeling of the rest of the game which is built on atmosphere and exploration.

And Pix, I hope you enjoy the novel. It is written by the same guy who wrote the script for the game. He is a rather accomplished horror writer! It follows the game pretty well.

For those that have an obsession with physical media, a big box copy can be had for less than $20 shipped on ebay. As it was the “Highest selling horror computer game of all time,” copies are quite plentiful!

But it is sooooo good! I think I am in the minority here, but I love The 11th Hour. The puzzles are great and I love the story on offer.

I agree with you, if anyone is interested, give it a go! There are far worse ways to spend your time!

Thank you for this! I has no idea there was a VHS in the original release. What a great piece of history!

To tell you the truth, I have no idea! Most threads in which this was brought up just mention the problem and then link to a program that can help. I will check my settings next time I run through it and see if I notice a difference.

As far as the ScummVM, one of the biggest complaints about the 25th anniversary edition is the the puzzle was not fixed, just made optional, so I am not sure what can be done in that case.

At any rate, thank you for the suggestion!

I agree with Bogus. There are quite a few programs on-line that one can use to get past that puzzle and still see the cut scene. If we do play this, I would be happy to post a couple of links to them in the forums.

I would happily try this out. As an American, I have no experience with cricket outside of the line from the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, “Cricket! Nobody understands cricket! You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket!” Anyway, I have always been interested to learn the rules. Let’s give it a whirl I say!

Color me interested! I would love to play this in the club! The early horror stuff was great because they had to rely on mood and story to get under your skin.

    +1

I don’t know about anyone else but I was super disappointed with the 25th anniversary edition. The mouse cursor just felt off. I played most of the way through it and just never got the hang of it’s new behavior. Still, it may be a great choice for those new to the game.

You sir, Mr. Mgoddard, are a saint! I played Challenge of the Ancient Empires so much as a kid and never could remember the name. I now know what this weekend holds for me…

Oh man! This is the game I asked my parents for when I wasn’t allowed to play Doom! I sunk way too many hours into this… I would love to revisit it in the club!

I agree with Evil Taco. The tool tips alone make OpenXcom so much more accessible for those playing a digital version with no manual to reference for what the buttons do! This made me feel much more at home in the game.

This game is relentless! I have almost finished all 6 episodes and just barely feel like I am getting a hold of the game play. Cheap deaths are what is on the menu for the entire game. I never feel “comfortable” like I do in Doom or Duke. I am always on cheap corner away from death, no matter my health.

Lets do this PLEASE! During an era of games pushing technical limits, ROTT had the gall to come out based purely on fun and break-neck game play. I boot this one up at least once a year.

I have had this game in my steam library for quite a while now and never gotten around to playing it. This would be a nice excuse to fire it up and get through it.

Great game for sure! This would be an absolute gem to play again!

However, I will always love the original game more as it is a more accurate representation of the book, which I love a bit too much…

I agree that this is one of the best Star Wars games out there. If we do play this one, it will make eventually going back to X-Wing pretty tough as this on is an improvement in every way! But then again, it may be a great way to see the progression of this series!

I am all about the 7th guest series! And with the fan game, The 13th Doll, due out this June, you all may be able to get an interview with the crew, or just maybe Robert Hirschboeck, the actor who played Stauf… Just some wishful thinking but you all have surprised me in the past!
