SpaceGameJunkieParticipantTaking my homework with me:
I love MagicDOSBox.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantI’m just using vanilla DOSBox and finding it perfectly playable at 3000, just like the olden days.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantYeah, more flight sims!!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantIt’s astounding, and easy to get into thanks to its per-mission difficulty settings. There’s also a great training mission you can redo until you feel comfortable with it.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantIt’s penetrable, absolutely.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantSo after playing the original for a few hours, I think I have to switch to Pioneer, and I played HUNDREDS of hours of the original back in the day.
Now though? It’s just too clunky for my patience.
Nevermind, Pioneer doesn’t have my favorite ship, the Imperial Trader, so back to Frontier it is!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantI’ll never stop being mad at Righteous Fire. If you know, you know.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantYeah, definitely has to be a bot.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantBack in the day I DID spend months playing this. Though *I* joined the Empire. 😉
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantSadly not, falselogic, as it’s not available for digital purchase anywhere.
Glad you’re getting the hang of things, David!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantCongrats on your first landing!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOh that’s a nice find, thank you Martli.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOh that is marvelous. Thank you!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantHey friends, episode 2 of Retro Dogfight is out, wherein we look at the three LucasFilm WWII sims!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOMG I loved (Insert title here)!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantI’d like to help ying to find the game too!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantI just played the OG DOS version for years, that’d would be my recommendation.
Pioneer is indeed a love letter to the game, and is more modern, but I don’t think it’s a 1:1 comparison. I’m not 100% on that, however, as I don’t have as much time with Pioneer.
I think if you wanted the general gist of the gameplay, Pioneer would be fine. If you wanted the nitty and the gritty, run the original.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOh damn, that’s sad.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantWow, I’d never even heard of this one. Looks fun!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantThey always do.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantThank you so much!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipant‘Allo!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantHey friends, I wanted to chime in with a new podcast partially inspired by DOS Game Club!
I love old flight sims, but couldn’t find a podcast on the subject, so I decided to make my own. It’s called Retro Dogfight, and it’s two old sim grogs and me talking about classic flight sims.
You can listen, subscribe and learn more about it here:
And you can join our Discord here, if you so choose:

Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy the show.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantIt’s the best of the Elite series. Just a masterpiece.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantHah, you’re right, good catch!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOH that’s very cool, I had no idea. Thank you!!
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOh yeah, this is still, I feel, the best Star Wars game, period. Full stop. Nothing has bested it. Also, one of the best space dogfighting games, only bested by Freespace 2, I feel.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantWow, that looks pretty cool. Easy to install, too.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantYeah, the ASCII graphics allow for both flexibility of gameplay as well as more focus being put under the hood, like the cunning AI and such.
It does look daunting at first, to be sure, but the game has tutorials and manuals, and I also made a YouTube tutorial series if you’re interested. If an idiot like me can grasp it, anyone can.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantHey it’s on Steam and GOG now!

SpaceGameJunkieParticipantBut…Discord is aaaaawesome.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOh I plan to. Already made a suggestion. Do y’all primarily hang out here or your IRC?
Speaking of, we have a Discord, and we’d love to have y’all as well, so I’d like to extend an invitation in turn. 😉
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantOne of the finest flight sims ever. Please cover this one.
SpaceGameJunkieParticipantHey folks, listening to this for the first time, really enjoying it. Starflight was my first DOS game back in 1986, so I’m glad to hear old and new players discuss it. Can’t wait to listen to other shows too. Thanks for covering DOS games!
